My Birchbox Dilemma

I discovered Birchbox and thus the concept of subscription boxes back in April 2016. I attended a digital marketing conference in NYC, and met Rachel Silver who was the former head of Birchbox’s social media presence. Rachel spoke about the power of using Facebook Live (before it took off like wildfire) by demonstrating how Birchbox used this video tool  to unbox their monthly boxes. Tips were provided on how to maximize each item in the box to its full potential. 

When I came back to Florida, I investigated the company a little further and decided to give it a whirl. Each month it was exciting to wait with bated breath for the delivery of my Birchbox, which was customized to my taste, wants and needs when it came to skin, body, hair care and cosmetics. I’d review each item and submit on the company’s website…that was when reviews were rewarded with points with dollar value, which could be used to purchase additional items. They dropped that benefit during the summer of 2016 with minimal communication…via an email that I never received.

The last couple of months I’ve been really disappointed with my monthly items. I’ve not been wowed by any samples like  in the past. For instance, my November box featured the following: Diamond Dust Leave-in Creme by Label.M (positive is the fragrance), Lemon + Coconut Bath Bomb by Level Naturals (have not dropped into the bath just yet but again, nice smell), Hydra-C Eye Contour Gel Cream by Marcelle  (best sample of the bunch but I do own a number of full-size Marcelle products due to prior monthly boxes), Super Line Preventor Overnight Radiance Cream by Prescriptives (night cream that doesn’t really help my skin) and lastly HUGE Extreme Lash Mascara by Stila (mascara does make lashes big in every way however the wand easily gets clumped).

Early on my samples were fabulous to the point where many evolved into holy grails. But now…not so much. Additionally, during the summer, Birchbox changed their shipping provider and the box showed up late a couple of times. Granted, there were two apologetic emails from the CEO, but the boxes have still been showing up during the last 10 days of the month (used to be the first 10 days).

So my current Birchbox dilemma: I am the point where I’m thinking that if my December box is not to my taste or lacking, I will cancel my membership. And will I swap with a different subscription service? Definitely contemplating FabFitFun that provides full-size products and is a quarterly subscription. So we shall see…
